Horticulture is the field of plant cultivation and management. In agriculture, a horticulturalist works to increase yield, vigor, size, and taste of plants. They also coordinate research programs out in the field and in the lab. Horticulture work in the lab deals a lot with biology and chemistry experiments to test how yield can be increased from plants. Horticulture in the field involves crop management, irrigation, scheduling, and crop data management.
Horticulturalist are typically employed by plant and food production businesses and research firms. They can also work with homeowners and municipalities to for proper plant management/aesthetics of a park or a garden.
For high schoolers, the following courses are recommended: a focus on science (particularly biology/chemistry/botany), mathematics, and computer science are also recommended.
